What inspires you to write?
Published: Fri, 12/12/14
Happy Friday, folks, As we head into the holiday season and its many distractions, I must say, for now at least I'm feeling inspired. For the past week, I've been hard at work on a short
story that's been giving me trouble for a while now. I had been avoiding that story, steering clear of the angst I was sure it would cause me, until the day last week I decided to sit down with it and see what would happen. What happened is, I rediscovered my interest in that piece and re-immersed myself in the process of writing it. As it turns out, the experience wasn't trying at all. Just the opposite. It was invigorating and full of joy. The ability to return to that story evaded me for a long time. I just couldn't find a way in and was starting to feel as if I never would. Then something wonderful
happened: while working on a critique of a historical romance for a WriteByNighter (you know who you are!), I got inspired. I got motivated. I thought, If this dedicated writer could find her way through her story, I can find my way through mine. Because every story, every narrative, every piece of writing comes with its own unique challenges. It's very rare that the writing process is smooth from beginning to end. But the mark of success is not the ease of the journey; it's the gumption to
reach the end. So before the craziness of the holidays fully descends and your writing takes a temporary backseat, think about this: What inspires you to write? Reading others' creative work, reading your own, attending a writer's group, taking a walk, doing a writing prompt (like this one) . . . whatever works for you, do it. If you don't yet know what works for you, give one of these activities a try. Who knows? You just might get inspired, and be closer than ever to that joyful moment of typing "The End." Wishing you an inspiring day, Justine Justine Tal Goldberg Owner, WriteByNight P.S. If you know someone who might benefit from today's message, please feel free to forward this email along.
