Warning: You can’t please everybody

Published: Wed, 05/13/15

Most of the time, I'm proud to say that we get really positive feedback on our emails, notes from WriteByNighters like you who find inspiration in our messages, valuable lessons they can apply to their creative work.

Sometimes, though, we hear from folks who for one reason or another take issue with what we have to say. That’s exactly what happened the other day.

In response to last week’s email, writing advice from our talented staff of coaches and consultants, I received the following message:

“I must say that I was less than impressed by your e-mail which was meant to offer advice for new writers. The references were circular in parts and others were not even clear. ‘Do that thing with your Butt?’ Not real appropriate or professional. I will look on for more a site offering more serious and professional information.”

Please understand, I’m not sharing this with you to disparage this person. We are all entitled to our feelings and opinions, and it’s our right to make those feelings and opinions known.

I’m sharing this with you for the same reason I share every message with you: to help you progress in your writing lives.

This unhappy message and others like it remind me of a valuable lesson: you can’t please everybody.

Can you imagine if I never offered any opinions, advice, thoughts, or ideas for fear that a member of our audience wouldn’t like what I had to say? I’d end up saying nothing at all.

What if your favorite author never wrote that book you cherish because s/he was afraid some readers wouldn’t like it? You’d be poorer for not having that book in your life.

And if you stop writing, or maybe never start, because you think your friends, family, critics, whoever, won’t be impressed? Well, that’s a downright tragedy.

You can’t please everybody. You never will. So rather than strive for the impossible, stay true to yourself. Write what you feel. Write what you believe in. Write your passion, and you won’t go wrong.

For help writing your passion, coaching can't be beat. Check out our three varieties of writing coaching today, then book a FREE chat with me to discuss.

Our clients say it's the best decision they've made for their writing. Now, the decision is yours.

Happy writing,
Justine
