Greetings, writers,
Do the words "Short's the best position they
is" mean anything to you?
If so, you're either already familiar with, and probably love, the story we've chosen for the May (and first) edition of the WBN Story Club or you are, in fact, Coyle's
cousin from Mississippi.
Tobias Wolff's "Bullet in the Brain" checks in at under 2,000 words, and the plot action can't take up more than ten minutes of clock time.
But somehow, in a few short pages, Wolff manages to take us from a bank in the 1990s to a baseball field in the 1950s, passing over, but somehow also not passing over, the intervening forty years of the main character's
life.
I realize I wrote "somehow" twice in that sentence. When you read the story, you'll know why. It's... special.
And I hope you agree.
This week's blog post includes a link to "Bullet in the Brain," a bit of backstory on how/why I chose it, and a few instructions for joining the discussion.
But basically? Read the story at your leisure and join the discussion at your leisure. Leave your opinions, impressions, questions or anything else in the comments section, and feel free to offer answers to any questions your fellow club members have.
It's a club. We're all in it together!
And you probably will have some questions about this story. I do. Let's try to solve 'em all together.
