Are We There Yet? You & Your Writing Goals

Published: Sat, 07/15/17

Hi, WriteByNighter!

Because we're about halfway through the year, my burning question for the week is: Are you halfway, or more, toward accomplishing the 2017 writing goal(s) you expressed in this long-ago post?

Full disclosure: I'm not! And I never will be.

I'm merely having a brand of success different than the one I had in mind in January. My initial goal was to finish a draft of my novel. Instead, I scrapped that pig after three chapters and started a new project.

Now I'm about 20,000 words into that new project. And you know what? It's the best writing I've ever done. And it's the most excited I've ever been about anything I've worked on.

And all because I laid to rest my original writing goal.

If your original writing goal is dragging you down, what better time to make a new one than now, just over halfway through the year and not quite halfway through the summer?

If you're well on your way to achieving the goal you set, what better time to brag about your amazing progress?

You can do either one of those things in the comments section of this week's blog post, "A Midsummer Night's Writing Goals Check-In."

If you're too shy to brag in public but still want to crow to someone, you can reach me by replying to this email.

If you're having trouble hitting your goal, let me know why and let's try to figure it out together.

Cheers,
David

WriteByNighter of the Week: Michael Goins

Michael has taught writing and literature at the college level for many years, including at UT-San Antonio, a city in which you can also find one of Michael's poems published... on the city's buses!

Michael runs a bed and breakfast called Bella Green west of San Antonio, and here's where some of you fellow WriteByNighters may come in: He's looking for a few dedicated fiction writers to form a writing group that will meet monthly at Bella Green, an "eco-sensitive, private hilltop getaway" in the beautiful Texas Hill Country.

When we asked Michael why he writes, he told us, "I write because I have to. Period."

Sounds good to us.

If you're interested in joining Michael's group, reply to this message and I'll put you in touch.

To nominate yourself as a future WriteByNighter of the Week, tell me a bit about what you're working on and what you love about writing, and pass along a link or two where our readers can find your work.
