The Texas Observer Short Story Contest & More

Published: Sat, 07/08/17

Happy weekend, writers!

Exciting news: the seventh annual Texas Observer short story contest is now open for submissions.

Our guest judge this year is Deb Olin Unferth, author of the recent hit story collection, Wait Till You See Me Dance. "In short fiction I look for a voice that feels original, clear and urgent, and for a situation under pressure," Deb says.

So keep that in mind if you're considering submitting. The winning writer gets $1,000 and publication in the October issue of the magazine, as well as online.

And yes, WriteByNighters are welcome to enter! With a couple of exceptions.

For more details on all of this, check out this week's blog post.

Last but certainly not least, scroll down to meet your very first WriteByNighter of the Week: Austin-based writer John Chambers.

If you'd like to be a future WriteByNighter of the Week, reply to this message and share with me what you're working on, where our readers can find your writing online, and any words of wisdom you'd like to share.

Cheers,
David

P.S. If you know someone who might benefit from today's message, please feel free to forward this email along. Go on, help a writer out.

P.P.S. Last week we ran an interview with Joe Giordano, author of the new novel Appointment with ISIL. Joe is answering any and all questions, so don't be shy: ask away!

WriteByNighter of the Week: John Chambers

John is the author of a nonfiction book, The Physics of Being, and the novel Scourge Ship. He also writes regularly for Cracked.com; check out his popular piece "The 6 Most WTF Scientific Theories About Existence" (published under a pseudonym).

"Writing is supposed to be fun!" John tells us. "If you're not having fun, then you're not doing it right. ... Even if writing is your profession, it doesn't need to feel like a job.

"Love what you write, and your readers will love it too."

Amen, John Chambers.
