Like the Artist You Are

Published: Sat, 08/26/17

Happy weekend, writers!

We expect all of you to send us gifts of bronze and pottery this week. Why?

Because it's the eighth anniversary of the founding of WriteByNight, and according to some random website, the traditional gifts are bronze and pottery.

Bronze because it's the combination of two metals to create something stronger. Pottery because relationships are shaped and molded like clay in the hands of a potter

The analogies make themselves, don't they? You shape and mold your words, like the artists you are, and then you send them to us so that we can help you create something even stronger.

Eight years ago, when we started with one little twelve-seat workshop and some terrible ideas for our company name, never would we have imagined that we'd still be going strong here in 2017.

We've processed literally millions of your words, and created, through these messages and blog posts and more, probably over a million more.

It's a lot of words. (Though to be fair, many of them repeat.)

But the thing we're perhaps proudest of is the community we've helped create.

Even if we've never met, when your names appear in my inbox or in comments on our blog, I feel like I'm hearing from friends. And every week someone else tells us how they draw encouragement and inspiration from our posts and from these email messages, as well as from discussions with fellow WriteByNighters.

And so do I. For reasons I get into in more detail in this week's blog post, "Together We Make Stronger Art."

Think of how much writing you can do in eight years. If you write just twenty-five words per day for eight years, you have a book. Twenty-five words. It's nothing! This paragraph is thirty-nine words long!

One hundred words a day? Four books.

Two hundred words a day? Well, let's stop here. I'm not a math major.

Anyway. Thank you for sharing your words with us these past eight years.

Oh right, and those terrible ideas for our company name before we settled on WriteByNight? One of them is Shibboleth. And that's not even the worst!

Cheers,
David

P.S. If you know someone who might benefit from today's message, please feel free to forward this email along. Go on, help a writer out.

P.P.S. Last week you helped me get back into a groove. Thank you for your wise words.
