Hello, WriteByNighters,
Recently I had a chance to interact with a writer
whose work I greatly admire. I turned down that chance.
Here's a funny story: When Roald Dahl was just six years old, he convinced his mother to take him to Beatrix
Potter's house so he could meet the beloved author of The Tale of Peter Rabbit.
When they arrived, Potter asked what he wanted, and little Roald said he was there to see Beatrix
Potter.
Potter's reply: "Well, you've seen her. Now buzz off!"
I haven't had any such negative experience -- and I count myself lucky. Because I've heard horror stories that put Roald Dahl's to shame, aspiring writers meeting a hero and being absolutely devastated by the encounter.
Some of these anecdotes are awful and disheartening; others are hilarious, despite themselves.
We want to hear yours! Have you had a terrible interaction with a writer whose work you admire?
Let us
know about it, either by replying to this message or by leaving a comment over at this week's blog post, "Meeting Your Favorite Writer."
If you wish, you can obscure the name of the writer in question; we'd rather have your whitewashed story than none at all.
If we get enough of these, We'll make a blog post out of 'em so that we can all enjoy the cringe-worthy awkwardness and horror.
