Hi WriteByNighters,
A very happy Easter and/or Passover, to those of you who celebrate 'em. And a very happy Opening Day weekend to you baseball fans.
I'm sure many of you have plenty going on this weekend.
I also know that many of you will drop everything to try a new writing exercise.
So that's what we're throwing out there this week.
A couple of weeks ago, a WBNer named Jon asked us for an exercise to help kick-start some short fiction he was struggling with. So I sent him an exercise that we've used for about ten years now.
I haven't heard from him since, which I can only assume means that he's written about 120,000 words in that time.
It's a quick and simple fill-in-the-blank
exercise, based on some John Gardner words of wisdom about the "inescapable" plot form.
You can find Gardner's passage, as well as our exercise, in this week's post, "Easy Plot Exercise."
(Hey, I call 'em like I see 'em.)
After you do the exercise, paste your results in the comments if you want a second opinion, or just want to show the world how awesome your new story
idea is.
And then you can get back to your Easter egg hunts, your Seders, and your ceremonial first pitches.
