Hi WriteByNighters,
With Halloween season approaching, and having just read Frankenstein for the first time ever (how did it take me so long!?), my thoughts are on horror fiction.
I
have a backlog of classics I plan to work through in October, including Dracula, The Haunting of Hill House, and some spooky short stories from Poe & Co., but I've realized that I have absolutely no idea who's doing what in contemporary horror.
Twenty-five years ago I read my share of Stephen King and Dean Koontz, but as an adult I've lost touch with the genre.
What I want to know is, who's who in horror today? What scary books will you be reading this Halloween, and what is the scariest book or story you've ever read? Who are your favorite horror practitioners?
Also, do scary books affect you differently than other horror media (movies, games, etc.)? Why?
And finally, when a writer tries to scare you but doesn't, what is it that goes wrong?
Let's get spooky, friends!
