Greetings, WriteByNighters,
Earlier this week I came across a famous quote commonly misattributed to Hemingway: "Write drunk, edit sober."
It made me realize that I almost never drink while writing anymore. I used to, though. Often. Mostly in my mid-twenties, when I had some notions about how the lowering of my inhibitions was likely to lead to more inspired and truthful writing.
I know plenty of writers who drink (or smoke pot) while writing. My theory on that is: Hey, whatever works. It's not my approach anymore, but I don't begrudge anyone for doing it if it helps them tap into their creativity.
What's your take on "Write drunk, edit sober"? Do you drink while writing? Why or why not? And if you do, how does it influence your work, your process, or your approach?
I know this can be touchy stuff, so feel free to use a fake name in your comments if you'd prefer.
