Happy holiday weekend, WriteByNighters!
But what about the fears of our characters?
In the comments of a recent post, David L. asked a question I think will make a great topic: "What was the worst thing you ever did to a hero/heroine?"
Most fiction can be summarized in this way: A character wants something, but he or she must overcome obstacles to get it.
The more obstacles you erect between your character and his/her goal, the more satisfying it will be when (if?) he/she gets there.
In this week's post, I share a few of the harsh things I've done to my protagonists. But none of them are particularly brutal. I think I've been too easy on my characters!
How about you? What is the worst thing you've ever done to one of your characters?
What's the worst thing you've ever seen another writer do to a character? And why do you think conflict and obstacles are so important in fiction?
