Hello, writers & readers,
If/when I self-publish a book, I already know what will be my least-favorite part of the process. It's the same least-favorite part we've heard from many self-published writers.
Typeface and design.
Thousands of fonts to choose from. Thousands of decisions about margins and spacing and layout. What to do with the front cover? The back cover?
What to do if you lack the money to hire someone to do these things for you?
As a reader, one thing that bothers me is deckle-edged pages. What are your likes and dislikes when it comes to typeface, layout, and design? Do you ever buy -- or not buy -- a book based on cover or layout?
As a self-published writer, what was your process for making book design decisions? What advice would you give to a writer preparing to self-pub for the first time?
We may not all have the money to hire a book designer, but we do have each other. Sharing your likes and dislikes as a reader, and your experiences and advice as a writer, might prove invaluable to someone looking to self-publish for the first time.
Or the tenth time. Because I can't imagine it ever gets easier.
