How about a guy turned giant bug overnight? A town being crushed by the sky? Well, now you have.
It's called magical realism, a literary genre which makes room for fantastical events in an otherwise realistic world. And it's awesome.
If you've ever tried your hand at magical realism, I don't need to tell you how freeing it is; how it sparks imagination; how it invites you and your writing into new and exciting territory; how wonderfully strange and inspiring it can be.
If magical realism is new to you, there you have it. You're in for a wild ride.
Magical realism vets and newbies are invited to join WriteByNight instructor Cecily Sailer for a 4-week workshop focusing on the study and practice of the magical realism genre. You'll read and discuss published stories, essays on craft, and most importantly, your fellow workshoppers' writing. You'll leave the workshop with an original piece of magical realism and insight into how to improve it.
The Magical Realism Workshop meets Wednesdays, October 16, 23, 30, and November 6, 7-9 p.m. at WriteByNight (1305 E. 6th Street, Suite 4, Austin). The workshop fee is $109. The registration deadline is midnight this Sunday, October 6th, so don't delay!
